Attention: Please find the workaround available for the June 28 Microsoft patch concerning printing issues to USB printers.

The issue is that once the patched is downloaded and installed it creates a copy of the existing USB port and labels it (Copy 1). The USB printer now attached to this port fails to print. Uninstalling the patch does not remove this duplicate port. So uninstalling it does not resolve the problem. At this point the only solution is to delete both the USB printer and ports then re-install the USB printer. That is easily done by unplugging the USB printer and plugging it back in which should automatically install the printer driver and port.

The Microsoft patch which appears to be the problem is KB5014666.

June 28, 2022—KB5014666 (OS Builds 19042.1806, 19043.1806, and 19044.1806) Preview (microsoft.com)

In this article it describes new Print and Scan Features that talks about USB support.

Introducing the following Print and Scan features:

  • IPP over USB support – Microsoft has supported Internet Print Protocol (IPP) for network printers starting in 2018 with the release of Windows 10, version 1809. We are now expanding IPP support to USB printers.
  • Print support app (PSA) APIs – Using the PSA framework, printer manufacturers can extend printer functionalities and user experience. For more information, see Print support app design guide.
  • PIN-protected printing for IPP and Universal Print – Standard print dialogs now include a user interface to enter a PIN code.
